purpose companion from Woodsville NH should be of interest to those of you with plans for hunting the Granite State deer season opening Wednesday offers the views of a registra tion agent in Groveton as to why deer and bear tallies have been down in recent years and assures hunters there are more whitetails about than meets the eye Trouble is he says there enough hunt ers out there looking for them No argument on the latter point When a state loses something in the neighborhood of 26000 non resident hunters it has to reflect in the har vest but not conceding the deer population is what it used to be The herd is down and nobody is more aware of the problem than state game biologists who are using every card in the deck to solve it Shorter Season Shorter hunting seasons particu larly in the north country were fol lowed by an experimental antlerless deer permit regulation in a north west pocket bf the southern zone which is still in effect This year for the first time a bucks only law will begin on the sixth day of the season throughout the state in an effort to build up the herd The reason is obvious Of 4674 deer harvested by hunters last year 2)296 were females nearly half the total take and far short of the desired buck doe ratio of two to one You expect too much in the way of a fawn crop when you I kill that many females So the slim prospects for filling a deer tag in New Hampshire will get slimmer next Monday Hunters will be allowed to take either sex in both zones when the season opens state wide Wednesday but only through Nov 6 have to look for ant lers three inches of better in both zones for the remainder of seasons Closing date in the northern zone is Nov 13 in the southern zone Nov 27 The experimental area is the exception The season there will run Nov 2 27 but antlerless deer may not be taken without a special per mit It all sounds complicated to the averge hunter but the only way to go if New Hampshire is to regain its status as a deer hunting state Plenty of Deer As for more deer being about than is being reflected in harvest figures I happen to agree Part of the expla nation to New dismal deer tally in recent years has to do with a scarcity of hunters being out there to move them It may help to know that loggers report lot of deeper in the woods this year according to the Groveton registra tion agent It will take a significant frost he says to bring the whitetails out to feed on softened apples and he may be right The bowhunting and turkey excursions made in Vermont this year have turned up areas lit tered with fallen fruit none it being touched by deer Among the heaviest bears regis tered at the Groveton station this year was a 176 pounder taken in Whitefield by Jim Courniotes of Monson Mass Hinsdale LEGALS Automobiles for Sale 160
